Growing up

              By Mory Keita

When I was two and half feet, I was a rose,
And my Mama was my moon and my Dad was my sun.
They made me blossom with the purest of love.

At dawn my Dad would rise with the sun,
He would wake me up with his beams,
And tell me to eat and part for school, all with love.
He wished to make me grow beautiful and strong.

At dusk when the sun slept behind invisible mountains,
My Mama would appear with the moon, behind the cloudy curtain.
She would with a smile follow me wherever I went to.
She was with me in dreams and nightmares, in light and darkness.
I was her little prince and she watched over me growing up with love.

Now that I am six and half feet,
My Dad's sunlight is fleeting and my Mama’s moonlight is vanishing.
Tho' their love is falling like leaves,
They will always remain in heart my sun and moon.

The opening to this poem was beautiful. I really enjoyed how you used a passing day in relation to life. Thank you for sharing!

Are you really 6 and half feet tall?

Not really Robert. I am 6.2 feet tall. Is that surprising?

Thank you for your gracious comment and thank you for the support in this process.

Yes Mory, having good parents is the best blessing we can pass on to our own children. Lovely poem.

some really wonderful lines here, I especially liked your opening line, 'When I was two and half feet I was a rose.' The image of a kid being a rose really drew me in and held me for the rest of the poem. Great writing. I just joined Poets United too, so I look forward to reading more of your work.

I love the tenderness of the poem. So true... when growing up our dad is the sun and our mama the moon. - I totally relate with that

Well done

Mory,
This is such a beautiful poem! My favorite part was "My Dad's sunlight is fleeting and my Mama’s moonlight is vanishing.
Tho' their love is falling like leaves,"

Your parents must be so very proud of you and the love that you feel for them...it weeps from every word you have written.

I have sampled some of your other poems and find them to be written in an interesting old-world kind of style.

Keep it up and I will be back.

Very moving and beautiful. The love between a parent and a child is to me the stongest of there is. Love how you painted that picture with your words. :-)
